https://www.facebook.com/baochuchuyang/The 18.96-carat "Pink Legacy," the largest fancy vivid pink diamond Christie's has ever offered at auction, is expected to sell for between $30 million and $50 million in November.

Geneva—Another big pink diamond is heading to a jewelry auction this fall.

The 18.96-carat "Pink Legacy" will lead Christie's Magnificent Jewels auction on Nov. 13 in Geneva. The diamond is expected to sell for between $30 and $50 million.

The rectangular-cut gem is the largest and finest fancy vivid pink diamond Christie's has ever offered at auction, it said. (Note: It's not the largest fancy vivid pink diamond to go to auction. That designation belongs to the 59.60-carat oval-shaped "Pink Star," which Chow Tai Fook bought at Sotheby's Hong Kong for $71.2 million in April 2017.)

Christie's said in the press release announcing the stone's sale that the Pink Legacy "descended" from the Oppenheimer family, of De Beers fame, but did not respond to inquiries asking for clarification by press time.

Pink diamonds of this size and color are extremely rare, with Christie's noting that only four vivid pinks of 10+ carats have been offered at auction. Those stones have lit up auction houses in the past few years, reaching record prices as the popularity of pink diamonds soars.

In addition to the sale of the "Pink Star," which reigns as the most expensive jewel ever sold at auction, Christie's Hong Kong sold "The Pink Promise" , a 14.93-carat diamond, in November 2017 for $32.5 million.

Christie's said the Pink Legacy will be exhibited in Hong Kong, London and New York along with other highlights from the Magnificent Jewels auction before heading to Geneva for the November auction.

A shot of rough rubies from the Longido area of Tanzania

August 29, 2018

Traveling to the sources of colored stones is an unmatched experience, not only for its ability to help understand the supply side, but also for the opportunity to meet and interact with the people who live in the gemstone mining communities and help to drive the business.

They perform such integral work—mining and selling the gems that end up in the finished pieces we see at jewelry trade shows and in display cases at stores—yet, most often, they are among those who have so little.

Many people and organizations in the jewelry industry work to give back to the communities so influenced by the gem trade.

Gemstone faceter Roger Dery has long been one of those, and now he wants to make his contribution even bigger.

On Tuesday, Dery, along with wife Ginger and daughter Rachel—all of whom are part of Roger Dery Gem Design—launched Gem Legacy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting education, vocational training and the local economies of East Africa.

The introduction of the official 501(c)(3) is really just an extension of the work the Derys already had been doing in their many years of travel to the area, including supporting a cutting school in Arusha, Tanzania, and a Maasai school in Longido, Tanzania.

But the idea for formalizing their aid actually came from industry members who traveled with them to East Africa last summer—including Chris Clover-Field of Field's Jewelers in California, Meredith Schlessinger of Byard F. Brogan and Katie Bisceglia from Stauer Jewelers, to name a few from the 21-person group—banding together with the intent of launching the Dery Trust.

"They wanted there to be a 501c3 that would … enable each of them to contribute to something that they had become passionate about after meeting the people and the good that can be done with so very little to people who need so very much," Ginger Dery said.

They also wanted to create a fund that would allow the Derys to have money with them when it was needed for their various initiatives.

Eventually, the Derys took over the process of formalizing their aid in the form of a nonprofit and gave it a name that reflects the impact gems can create and the good they can do.

The 5-carat "Ai" fancy vivid blue diamond is the highlight of Sotheby's Oct. 3 jewelry auction in Hong Kong.

September 19, 2018 Hong Kong—A 5-carat fancy vivid blue diamond ring will be the highlight of Sotheby's upcoming jewelry auction in Hong Kong.

Named the "Ai" diamond after the Chinese word for love, the stone is expected to sell for between $12.5 and $15.3 million when it hits the block next month.

It is the leading lot in Sotheby's Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite jewelry sale, slated for Oct. 3 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

In addition to the Ai diamond, the jewelry auction will feature a pair of earrings with old European brilliant-cut fancy vivid yellow diamonds weighing 51.17 carats total—"well-matched" in color, ton and saturation, Sotheby's said—accented with white diamonds. They are designed to depict a fruitful harvest of melons flowering from their vines.

The earrings, pictured below, could sell for between $4.8 and $6.1 million.

There also will be a number of important jade pieces, including a necklace composed of 51 jadeite beads of a brilliant emerald green color and with "very good" translucency, with a diamond clasp signed Chaumet. Pictured below, its pre-sale estimate is available upon request by Sotheby's.

The jewelry auction also will include two fine jadeite bangles displaying hues of both lavender and green that  blend seamlessly. Possessing strong saturation and fine translucency, the pair will be sold separately, with estimates of $665,000-$895,000 (left bangle) and $640,000-$895,000 (right bangle).

The jewelry auction also will have a section featuring works created by celebrated Asian contemporary designer Wallace Chan. This includes the tanzanite, chalcedony and diamond ring seen below, which could sell for as much as $230,000, as well as the earrings pictured below featuring conch pearl, gems and diamonds, which could sell for between $281,000 and $408,000.

The gallery also shows a pair of gem-set earrings from Chan, also featuring jade and diamonds, which are expected to garner between $70,500 and $109,000.

Hong Kong's largest jeweler has launched a blockchain-powered app that provides consumers with a 4Cs digital grading report, along with data tracking the diamond's journey from mine to market.

Chow Tai Fook partnered with the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) to develop the platform for its T Mark brand, claiming the technology will revolutionize the way the industry engages with customers.

"Consumers live on their mobile devices, so we need to use similar platforms to improve their buying experience and ensure trust and confidence," Kent Wong, managing director of Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group, explained in an interview with Rapaport News following the launch last week.

The jeweler, which has more than 2,600 points of sale across Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China, is testing the platform at four of its Hong Kong stores before expanding to other locations by year-end.

When a customer buys a T Mark-branded diamond, the GIA grading report is registered to him or her and recorded on the blockchain ledger shared between Chow Tai Fook and the GIA. In addition to the data that typically appears on a paper grading report, the T Mark app also provides information such as the diamond's country of origin and where it was cut and polished, as well as details of its design and setting into jewelry.

Much of that manufacturing process is completed by Chow Tai Fook, since the company polishes about 50% of diamonds larger than 0.20 carats in-house. That number increases to 70% for the T Mark brand, which is focused on 0.30- to 0.99-carat diamonds in the pilot phase, according to Wong.

Using a patented nanotechnology technique, the company inscribes a unique serial number on the table of each diamond before putting the stones on the blockchain, he explained. More than 3,000 T Mark diamonds have so far been listed on the blockchain, which was developed by service-provider Everledger and secured by IBM's platform, the companies reported.
M2M to Blockchain

The program also represents a milestone for the GIA in that it is the first time its grading reports have been available in a digital format, secured by blockchain technology, explained Tom Moses, executive vice president and chief laboratory and research officer at the GIA.

The system differs from the GIA's Mine to Market (M2M) traceability program, which the lab launched last year. With M2M, the GIA works with participating manufacturers and miners to inscribe the rough diamond before it is cut and polished, so that the stone can be tracked through the pipeline, matching the resulting polished with the original rough stones.

However, those goods are currently not secured by blockchain, although Moses said the data and events that M2M recorded would eventually move to a blockchain database.

He also expects that the GIA will eventually provide digital grading reports for generic diamonds submitted to its labs. "That is ultimately our plan, and it's easy to envision," he said.

Doing so would enable other manufacturers to connect more easily with each other or the likes of Chow Tai Fook that are also on the blockchain, resulting in the whole pipeline becoming more efficient and secure, Moses explained.

However, that movement within the industry is being driven by consumers, who are demanding a more efficient and trustworthy buying experience, he stressed.

"We will now be able to link a customer with their diamond's grading results and record this relationship on the blockchain," Moses said. "This is an important milestone for the diamond industry and in moving blockchain from business-to-business, to business-to-consumer."

"It's an evolution in how we share information," he added.

On the red carpet, bracelets and rings are too often overshadowed by statement earrings or elaborate collars and necklaces, and that's a shame, because pieces like this Lorraine Schwartz bangle warrant a long second look.

As entranced as we were with actress Ellie Kemper's lavender jade, amethyst, coral and diamond earrings, also by Schwartz, we initially missed this show-stopping accoutrement.

The 18-karat rose gold "Caviar" bangle features luscious coral cabochons amid a sea of rose-cut white diamonds.

The bangle, Kemper's earrings and the yellow gold, coral and diamond ring she donned at the 2018 Emmy Awards are all available at Lorraine Schwartz, price upon request.

The International Institute of Diamond Grading & Research's new SynthDetect XL, a lab-grown diamond screening device that allows for more jewelry to be tested simultaneously

 September 18, 2018

London—The International Institute of Diamond Grading & Research has introduced SynthDetect XL, an advanced version of the SynthDetect screening device.

IIDGR, which is the De Beers Group's lab, introduced the SynthDetect machine last year, calling it the first screening device for man-made diamonds that can test multiple stones in set jewelry at once.

It uses IIDGR's patented luminescence technology to screen diamonds of all sizes in rings, earrings, bangles, brooches and necklaces.

Now, IIDGR unveiled a new version of the machine at the recently concluded Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair.

SynthDetect XL has a larger base unit that allows for more jewelry to be screened simultaneously, like larger necklaces, multiple solitaire rings and multiple bracelets.

The new version still uses the detection techniques for identifying natural (mined) diamonds developed for the original SynthDetect device, meaning if a stone in a piece of jewelry doesn't display the attributes of a natural diamond, it is highlighted immediately and with a high degree of accuracy.

De Beers did not respond to an email by press time inquiring about the machine's availability and pricing. (The original SynthDetect costs $16,250.)

"We're delighted to be introducing the next innovation in IIDGR's range of industry-leading synthetic screening devices, SynthDetect XL," IIDGR President Jonathan Kendall said. "Using the same revolutionary technology as the original SynthDetect, this new device allows more pieces of jewelry to be screened at a faster rate than ever before. SynthDetect XL will be another valuable tool for the trade, building on the strong positive feedback we've received since launching the first SynthDetect last year."

Chan was the first Asian jeweler to exhibit at the Biennale in Paris in 2012, and today can be seen at such major fairs as The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) and Masterpiece in London. His pieces are sought by collectors from around the world.

Rounding out the jewelry auction will be a selection of red carpet necklaces by jewelers such as Van Cleef & Arpels and David Morris, as well as a vintage Bulgari suite, and a curated selection of jewels primarily from the 1950s and 1960s from a "distinguished" private collection.

An 11-carat diamond will feature in Alrosa's inaugural auction of colored polished diamonds at the upcoming Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair.

The cushion-cut, fancy-deep-purple-pink stone (pictured) — which will lead the sale — is the largest diamond of its color the GIA has graded, Alrosa said Tuesday.

The miner will present 250 polished diamonds of various shapes and colors at the auction, which it has named "True Colour." They will include a vivid-orangey-yellow diamond weighing more than 15 carats, and a cushion-shaped, 11-carat, fancy-vivid yellow. The Hong Kong show runs from September 12 to 16.

"It took more than a year to prepare the collection," said Alrosa CEO Yury Okoemov. "It is a masterpiece of diamond production created by skillful professionals who put heart into their work, keep the traditions, and know what a real 'Russian cut' is."

Alrosa will use the sale as a step toward its goal of expanding further into the colored-diamond market, Okoemov added.

The miner will sell the collection through a special electronic platform, which it used previously to sell large stones, it said. After the initial sale, the company will hold a regular auction for its polished stones once or twice a year.

Starting this year, the miner has been sorting its colored rough diamonds into 19 color categories, and polishes most of them in its in-house manufacturing division.

Lesotho-focused miner Namakwa Diamonds will sell a 29.59-carat, fancy-pink rough stone in Antwerp this fall.

The company discovered the diamond at its KAO mine in the African country on June 12, according to brokerage firm Bonas-Couzyn, which will facilitate the sale. The stone — named the Rose of KAO — will appear in Antwerp for viewings from September 17 to 28, and bidding in an online tender will close October 1. The auction is part of the fourth sale of KAO goods this year.

Namakwa owns and operates the KAO mine through its subsidiary, Storm Mountain Diamonds. The asset has a record of producing fancy-color diamonds: The miner recovered the 36.06-carat Pink Storm in December 2013, and sold it the following month.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) found just one natural diamond in a melee parcel containing more than 1,000 undisclosed synthetic stones, according to a recent lab note.

The organization's New York center received 1,102 small diamonds weighing a combined 9.67 carats for its melee-analysis service. Initial screening referred 1,093 of them for further testing, while the GIA could not assess the other nine because they did not meet the service's criteria for examining stones.

Spectroscopic tests confirmed 1,092 of the 1,093 diamonds to be synthetics created using the High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT) technique. This case represents the largest percentage of undisclosed synthetic melee the GIA has seen in a parcel, researchers Stephanie Persaud, Wuyi Wang, Paul Johnson and Ivana Petriska Balov wrote in the summer 2018 issue of Gems & Gemology, the institute's journal.

"The increase in the amount of synthetic melee submitted — both disclosed and undisclosed — to GIA's laboratories for identification has exponentially increased since GIA began offering its melee-analysis service in 2016," the team wrote.

More commonly, the GIA receives bags of melee containing a mixture of natural and lab-grown diamonds, or with just a few synthetics — a practice known in the trade as "salting," the researchers said.

One notable characteristic of the latest melee batch was the absence of nickel, a catalyst that manufacturers often use in the HPHT process, the team wrote. Gemologists did not detect the element when they put the material through the spectroscopic examination.

"The majority of the HPHT synthetic melee had no detectable traces of [nickel], demonstrating the importance of advanced testing to identify these melees," the authors added.

Tiffany & Co.'s New York City flagship store will undergo a planned three-year renovation, beginning in 2019. Pictured is the location's Blue Box Café, which opened in 2017.

New York—Tiffany & Co. is planning on a facelift.

The jeweler announced Wednesday that it will completely renovate its New York City Fifth Avenue flagship store beginning in spring 2019.

The company is not confirming the total cost for the renovation, though a calculation by Bloomberg based on the information supplied by Tiffany put it at $250 million at least.

Originally opened in 1940, the space encompasses 10 stories at the corner of 57th Street.

Tiffany CEO Alessandro Bogliolo said in a news release on the renovation: "We are extremely excited about the opportunity to transform our iconic New York flagship store and create a dramatic new experience for customers. Innovation will remain at the forefront of Tiffany's plans for 727 Fifth Avenue, and the newly reimagined flagship will serve as the modern crown jewel of our global store network."

The move comes, surprisingly, after the opening of the Blue Box Café on the revamped home décor floor last year. A representative for Tiffany declined to say if the Fifth Avenue remodel would involve changes to the café or the just-renovated fourth floor in general.

The company did say that, during the renovation, which will last until the end of 2021, it "expects to remain open for business throughout," though it will expand to a neighboring space temporarily, located at 6 E. 57th Street where Niketown used to be, to minimize disruption.

The very first Tiffany store opened in New York City at 259 Broadway in 1837. The headquarters moved around the city until settling in its current spot, which has been featured in films like "Breakfast at Tiffany's," "Sleepless in Seattle" and "Sweet Home Alabama."

When it opened, it was the "one of the most architecturally advanced mercantile buildings of its type, boasting first-of-its-kind central air-conditioning, along with the main floor free of columns, its 24-foot ceiling entirely supported by trusses," the company said.

A face-up photo of the glued-together diamond recently spotted by graders in the GIA lab in Carlsbad (Photo by Robison McMurtry/GIA)

 August 15, 2018

Carlsbad, Calif.—The Gemological Institute of America said its Carlsbad lab recently received a diamond that had broken in half and been repaired with an adhesive of some sort.

In the summer 2018 issue of Gems & Gemology, GIA research associate Troy Ardon wrote a lab note about a 1.38-carat marquise-cut diamond submitted to the laboratory for colored diamond grading services.

Graders initially noted large fractures and a large cavity on the table. After careful examination under a microscope, they discovered that the stone had been broken in half and then repaired with an "unknown adhesive," a method the lab noted was unusual.

The GIA said there were a number of factors that hinted to it being broken and put back together imperfectly, the first being a large fracture from crown to pavilion showing a "sizeable gap" throughout the diamond.

The fracture indicated it was a repair, rather than two separate diamonds glued together to make a larger stone, because it had an irregular surface, according to Gems & Gemology.

From a certain angle, graders could also see large air bubbles trapped in the fracture.

Additionally, the facets that the fracture transected showed "slight to moderate" misalignment, which the GIA confirmed can't happen during the polishing process.

The GIA said polish lines on the pavilion facets contained a pattern that would've lined up if it wasn't for the fracture that separated them, demonstrating that the breakage occurred after the diamond had been at least somewhat polished. Beyond that, it's not possible to tell when the damage happened, the lab said.

While the application of glue to diamonds to form a diamond-diamond doublet has been done before, the GIA noted that it has never seen a broken diamond repaired with adhesive in this manner.

The lab was not able to grade the diamond because the 4Cs don't apply to "composites" like this. For example, the carat weight would actually represent the sum of the two diamond weights plus that of the adhesive.

We are so lucky as an industry that we get to be surrounded by such incredible, rare beauty all the time.

For me, this 80.25-carat tsavorite garnet perfectly summed up that advantage.

Tsavorite in any large size is rare, let alone a piece of this size. Add to that an exceptional clarity, and it was one pretty fantastic gem to see in person. This tsavorite, which won first place in the All Other Faceted category of Cutting Edge, was cut by the pros over at Nomads.

New York—Millennial women who purchase jewelry for themselves present a unique opportunity for luxury brands looking to reach Generation Y, a recent survey conducted by MVI Marketing shows.

A total of 1,001 women between the ages of 25 and 40 located in the United States and with a household income of $75,000 or higher completed the survey, which was conducted online between July 15-20. It focused on three product segments: jewelry, shoes and hotels.

MVI said the results of its study "reinforce reasons for optimism for luxury brands seeking an entry- level point with millennial consumers."

In fact, MVI has named the consumer segment of the millennial female who purchases jewelry for herself  "The Luxury Growth Demographic of Opportunity," because they have a 30-year-plus spending cycle that's just beginning, their brand attachments still are in the formative stage and their brand loyalty can be attained by factors like content engagement, style and adornment.

"You can see all the signs of a demographic segment that will be spending for themselves, and for gifts, in increasing numbers and escalating price points," MVI President Liz Chatelain said.

More than 51 percent of respondents said they purchase jewelry for themselves.

Another 14 percent said they purchase it as a gift for their spouse/partner, 17 percent said they make jewelry purchases together, and 18 percent said their spouse or partner purchase jewelry for them.

When respondents were asked about their motivations for buying jewelry for themselves, the top reasons included being able to get exactly what they want; rewarding themselves for a milestone; "just because;" and commemorating a special memory or trip, among others.

The survey also asked what specific brands respondents owned or were most likely to purchase, and Tiffany & Co., Pandora and Swarovski came out on top. The list also included Alex and Ani, Gucci, Cartier and Tory Burch.

According to the study, nearly 91 percent of survey takers indicated they research a brand before buying it.

Though MVI has done a few other studies about female consumers who buy jewelry for themselves, this was the first time they asked respondents how likely they were to buy a lab-grown diamond.

Forty-three percent indicated they would maybe purchase a lab-grown diamond but don't know much about them; 21 percent said they would probably purchase a lab-grown diamond as they learn more about them; and 13 percent indicated they were very likely to buy a lab-grown diamond.

MVI also asked survey-takers about their preferred metal for jewelry, and the results were led by white metals: 35 percent said white gold, 17 percent said silver and 15 percent said platinum.

Thirteen percent of respondents indicated they preferred rose gold and 11 percent said yellow.

The remainder said they didn't know or didn't have a preference (6 percent) or preferred mixed-metal pieces (3 percent).

The survey also questioned respondents about preferred jewelry designs, and topping the list was diamond jewelry, followed by gemstone jewelry and platinum with diamonds.

This week, an editor favorite came to town.

The American Gem Trade Association's annual gem cutting and jewelry design contest, the Spectrum Awards, took place in New York over the weekend. On Tuesday, editors were invited to the Ramscale Studio to view all the designs, including those crowned as winners.

Among them: this platinum ring set with an unbelievable 20.26-carat cushion-cut unheated yellow sapphire accented with 3.6 carats of diamonds.

Designed by Gross & Currens of the David Gross Group, a third-generation New York-based jewelry manufacturer, the ring won first place in the Evening Wear category.

We tried it on for size (see below), but sadly had to leave the Spectrum Awards event without it.

To see a complete list of the winners of this year's Spectrum Awards, read our story on the jewelry design contest.
