A wide array of coloured gemstones and fancy colour diamonds are expected to command attention at Bonhams' upcoming Rare Jewels and Jadeite sale in Hong Kong on May 27.

Headlining the lots is a 4.01-carat Pigeon's Blood Burmese ruby and diamond ring, which is valued at HK$3.5 million to HK$5 million or around US$445,000 to US$635,000. The ring is accompanied by reports from leading gemmological laboratories.

Another highlight of the sale is an 8.56-carat no-oil Colombian emerald and diamond ring with a pre-sale estimate of HK$5 million to HK$6 million or around US$635,000 to US$765,000.

Bonhams Asia Director of Jewelry Graeme Thompson commented, "The market has experienced the biggest price increases for emeralds and rubies which respectively have seen a 1,900 percent price increase for emeralds and a 1,100 percent increase for rubies in the past 10 years."

The sale will also feature a 12.92-carat Kashmir sapphire, which was recently discovered in a bank vault. The ring is estimated to fetch between HK$950,000 and HK$4 million or about US$120,000 to US$510,000.

"Kashmir sapphires are the rarest of gemstones and collectors are prepared to pay princely sums for top-quality specimens. Sapphires have experienced a 970 percent price increase over the past decade," noted Thompson.

A collection of rare fancy colour diamonds, including a 10.03-carat oval-cut fancy brown-pink diamond valued at HK$3.1 million to HK$5 million (around US$395,000 to US$636,000), will also be auctioned off.

Signed jewellery pieces from Van Cleef and Arpels, Cartier, Harry Winston, Graff, Chopard and Bulgari are also on the auction block, note the company.

This jadeite bangle was the highlight piece of the Sotheby's Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite auction, but failed to find a buyer on Tuesday.

Hong Kong--Though Sotheby's called it a "highly important" piece, the "Circle of Heaven" jadeite bangle didn't find a buyer in Hong Kong.

The rare bangle was expected to sell for $10.2 to $12.8 million at the Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite sale on Tuesday but failed to reach the reserve price.

The auction house described the piece as having a full, emerald-green color with "fine texture." It was named as such for its circular form and for the ancient Chinese belief that jade is the "stone of heaven."

When contacted by National Jeweler for comment, a Sotheby's spokesperson said that while the jewelry and diamond markets continue to "enjoy solid support" across price tiers, the jadeite market remains price sensitive.

Some of the other notable lots sitting at the top of the pre-auction estimates didn't sell, including an unmounted D color, flawless brilliant-cut diamond weighing 17.63 carats, expected to sell for up to $2.8 million; a signed Monture Cartier ring featuring a 14.72-carat step-cut Colombian emerald and brilliant-cut diamonds that Sotheby's thought could sell for up to $1.4 million; and a ring with a 14.18-carat step-cut fancy blue diamond with pink-tinted brilliant-cut diamonds, expected to go for between $5.9 and $7.6 million.

The top lot of the sale turned out to be a ring, pictured below, featuring a cushion-shaped Burmese ruby weighing 24.70 carats, set within a surround of pear-shaped diamonds. The shank is pavé-set with brilliant-cut diamonds with a pink tint.

It garnered $11 million, falling within its pre-sale range estimate.

After that, there was a large gap between the No. 1 lot and those that followed.

Falling at No. 2 was a pair of earrings featuring pear-shaped diamonds weighing 13.01 and 12.97 carats hanging from surmounts with 1.03- and 1.01-carat diamonds. They sold for $3 million.

There also was a 30.16-carat cut-cornered rectangular step-cut fancy vivid yellow diamond ring that went for $2.8 million and a 5.01-carat cushion-shaped fancy vivid purplish pink diamond with shield-shaped diamond shoulders that sold for $2.5 million.

A ring with a square emerald-cut fancy vivid orangey-yellow diamond weighing 10.30 carats set between two tapered baguette diamonds garnered $1.4 million.

Tuesday's Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite auction sales totaled $48.6 million. For all results, visit Sothebys.com.

Carlsbad, Calif.--The Gemological Institute of America's New York lab recently had a gemstone submitted for identification it hasn't seen before.

According to an article by Tyler Smith and Hollie McBride in the winter 2017 issue of "Gems & Gemology," the lab received two loose oval mixed-cut red gems for identification. Upon testing, the stones revealed refractive indices slightly higher than normal for corundum.

Higher refractive indices have been reported before for chromium-diffused corundum, in which extra chromium is added during heating to enhance the color. So, the article states, to the naked eye, the stones simply appeared to be chromium diffused and displayed red color concentrations at the intersections of the facets.

But further microscopic examination revealed a thin layer, about 0.3 mm thick, of "synthetic overgrowth"—a layer of lab-grown ruby that gave the stone its color—with a natural, almost-colorless sapphire at the core.

The authors said the two stones looked similar to Lechleitner synthetic overgrowth emeralds, named for Johann Lechleitner, who pioneered the process of giving a near-colorless beryl seed its green color with a synthetic emerald overgrowth in 1960. (The GIA's lab in Carlsbad, coincidentally, received a Lechleitner emerald for identification around the same time the rubies were submitted.)

Lechleitner also experimented with ruby overgrowth on both synthetic and natural corundum seeds.

While his specimens contained a number of elements, the two rubies submitted to the GIA were missing one—molybdenum—indicating there were different growth conditions present, according to the G&G article.

It noted that while this isn't the first report of synthetic ruby overgrowth on natural sapphire seeds, it is the first time material featuring such aspects has been submitted to its New York and Carlsbad laboratories for identification.

"The resurfacing of these vintage overgrowth synthetics shows that once a material is in the trade, it is here to stay," Smith and McBride said.
